The 3 Brewers of St Albans

The brewery was formed by myself (Mark) and my great friend Pete in mid 2012. United by our passion for real ales, and looking for a new challenge in life, we decided to open our own brewery in our home town of St Albans.  We started the brewery with just one rule – to brew consistently fantastic beers.

We found the perfect premises, an old potato store, on a farm on the outskirts of St. Albans. Our water comes fresh from our own borehole, ensuring our beers are unique and truly local.  We spent most of 2012 converting The Potato Shed into a gleaming brewery.  Then we test brewed, and test brewed – for four months – all the time improving the equipment and improving the beers.  Nothing but the highest quality would do – we wanted local people to be proud of their new local brewery!.  We launched our first beer – Classic English Ale – in May 2013.  We have deliberately kept the range small, so we can ensure our standards never drop and every pint is in perfect condition.

All of our beers are available to trade customers in cask and direct to consumers in cask and polypins. Additionally three of our beers, Classic English Ale, Golden English Ale and IPA are available in 500ml bottles.

Wherever possible we source local ingredients, and almost of all of our malts and hops are grown in England. Our spent grains feed the cattle on a local farm, and the spent hops are added to the compost on our own farm.

Follow us on Twitter or Facebook (@3brewers) for the latest news, or call the brewery to find out more.

Twist Teas

Underwhelmed by the teas on the market, Mother and daughter duo, Nicky Kavanaugh and Claire Ayres decided to do something innovative. and founded Twist Teas in the shared belief that there’s nothing like a cup of tea to lift the spirits and make you smile.

With the help of their world-renowned tea sommelier they created a range of the finest whole leaf teas and herbs that are full of little surprises.

Claire Ayres persuaded her old school friend Fraser Tant, former Head of Marketing at IGD, to join them and together they created a brand that mirrors their blends.

‘Blends with Benefits’ have been changing the way people think about tea!  The secret to creating blends that really deliver on taste and make you feel great.  What they can say is that it has a lot to do with the fact that they are made from the finest, whole leaf teas and herbs.  Hand blended so that when they are brewed – in cold or hot water – they taste delicious.  They also added ingredients with functional benefits so that you get more bang for your buck (or brew for your cup); Their teas offer unconventional flavour pairings that transform something nice – a rooibos blend – into something truly spectacular, Banana Shake, that’s capable of being brewed in hot or cold milk, or just plain old boiling water if you prefer and loved by adults and children alike.

Twist Teas has been delighting taste buds and making people smile for almost a year.  Their proudest moment to date wasn’t what you might expect; Meghan Markel enjoyed their blends during her recent stay at Soho Farmhouse.

Lussmanns has evolved into a successful, independent collection of five local-driven restaurants with a focus on making ethical and sustainable dining accessible to all without the pomp and preach. With thriving restaurants in Hertford, Harpenden, Hitchin, St Albans and Tring, Lussmanns’ success boils down to delivering on value and consistency whilst majoring on ethics.

From the vision of Managing Director Andrei Lussmann, both leading the team and lending a name, the business still works to the same original cornerstones it was founded on – that it’s absolutely possible to be both ethical and profitable whilst continuing to adapt and evolve in an ever-changing hospitality industry. Doing the right thing is rarely sexy and sometimes boring, but from an early age Andrei believed that integrity, respect and provenance of meat and fish truly mattered. Beef, lamb and pork is organically reared; chicken is always local and free-range; and 100% of the fish used is either MSC certified sustainable or on the Marine Conservation Society’s approved ‘fish to eat’ list.

Lussmanns’ menus have been a celebration of seasonality and passionate about provenance since before they became the restaurant marketing buzz words du jour. Strict on traceability, unwavering on a commitment to sustainability and truly vocal about local – Lussmanns offers a menu with nothing to hide and absolutely everything to deliver. Flavour-led, British at its core but with subtle global inspiration, Lussmanns serves an exceptionally value driven menu daily until 7pm, two courses for £14.50 and three courses for £17.50 alongside an a la carte and monthly changing specials’ board.  In Hitchin, Lussmanns, situated on the famous Market Square, serves a small but perfectly formed breakfast menu daily from 8.30am.

Lussmanns’ industry credentials also include being founder members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, SRA 3 star champions, two-time winners of Sustainable Small Restaurant Group of the Year as well as runners-up for five consecutive years in the Observer Food awards in numerous categories and the Best Foodservice Operator at the National Fish & Chips Awards 2016.

Launched in 2009, Capsicana was founded by self-taught chef, Ben Jackson through his love of chillies – and Latin American food. His award-winning range of products are packed full of authentic ingredients, so you can make great tasting recipes at home. The Capsicana story began with five kilograms of dry chilli flakes, packed into smaller zip-lock bags, which Ben sold from a market stall. Further pursuing his food journey, Ben spent his savings on importing chillies directly from Mexico. His quest to make Latin American flavours more accessible, less about the heat and more about the taste, saw Ben develop the Capsicana range over the years – spending time in the kitchen perfecting recipes and hosting tastings with friends to finalise the Capsicana cook sauces collection.

Ben comments; “The inspiration for Capsicana began back in the late 90’s when I was travelling around the Americas with my Dad – and eating in Mexican cantinas. It was here that I first feasted on proper Mexican food – which then became my default cuisine of choice, whether we were going out for dinner or I was just grabbing something by the side of the road. Everything about it enticed me – especially the delicious variety of ingredients and flavours.”

He explains further; “I came to understand that chillies are about so much more than just heat – it’s about blending the right ingredients into the right dishes. I had no idea at the time that I would go on to set up my own Latin American food business, but these were the experiences that laid the foundations for my love of Mexican food. So, in the years after returning to the UK, I hunted out difficult to find ingredients, so I could recreate the flavours I’d experienced whilst travelling – and started to learn about the other cuisines of Latin America.”

Fast forward to today and you can find Capsicana’s range of five cook sauces, including Mexican Chilli & Honey, Peruvian Chilli & Lemon, Cuban Chilli & Lime, Brazilian Chilli & Coconut – and the latest addition; Mexican Tangy Tomatillo, in the world food aisles at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Wholefoods. Also discover their range of seasonings and mixes including Brazilian Smoked Paprika & Spices, Mexican Smoked Cumin & Chipotle, and the new Mexican Guacamole Mix. Ben’s aim is to be the number one choice in authentic Latin American food in the UK and beyond. Capsicana’s Brazilian Chilli & Coconut cook sauce has just been awarded three Great Taste stars at the annual prestigious food and drink awards, as well as a much-coveted Golden Fork. Only 16 Golden Forks are awarded from 12,634 entries – making it a phenomenal achievement for Capsicana.
