Where to go for Christmas Day lunch in Hertfordshire

If you don’t fancy slaving over a hot fire this year, head to one of these restaurants for a festive feast on Christmas Day

1. Auberge du Lac restaurant, Brocket Hall, Welwyn

The gorgeous Brocket Hall estate in Hatfield, with over 500 acres of rolling parkland is home to Auberge du Lac, the former hunting lodge with lakeside views that will be serving a delicious Christmas Day feast this year.

With five courses to savour in the fabulously decorated restaurant, this will truly be a tempting and satisfying spread to capture the excitement of the season. Expect Champagne on arrival and mulled wine flowing as you unwind in the tranquil grounds of Brocket Hall.

2. St Michael’s Manor Hotel, St Albans

Contemporary meets classic at St Michael’s Manor Hotel in St Albans, set in a 500 year old building with hints of its heritage still visible in the interior design but updated to make a sophisticated and welcoming place to spend your Christmas Day.

There will be a daytime and evening menu with two or three courses to choose from and will include coffee and mince pies – what more do you need?

3. Laura Ashley The Manor, Elstree

If you are tired of slaving over a hot stove every Christmas Day afternoon, why not be pampered with a three course Christmas Day lunch at The Manor in Elstree? With gorgeous interiors that will be decorated with a festive touch, you can let someone else do the work as you tuck into a gourmet feast.

There will be starters such as smoked salmon with Dorset crab and a lemon and chive purée. Mains of course feature the traditional roast turkey with goose fat potatoes, glazed parsnips, Brussels sprouts, chipolatas in bacon, chestnut stuffing and a turkey jus – phew! Finish it all off with a dessert such as the chocolate orange and cranberry bomb. Dinner even comes with a special gift for each guest.

4. Tewin Bury Farm, Welwyn

Surrounded by rolling Hertfordshire countryside, Tewin Bury Farm Hotel is a four star hotel and wedding venue consisting of converted barns, red brick cottages and a timbered restaurant. After a glass of Champagne there will be a four course lunch, and even an appearance by the jolly red man himself. The meal will be held either in the 17th century Tythe Barn or the modern Williams’ Bar & Restaurant.

There are three options from the starter, main and dessert menus including a cream of white onion soup with cheddar and sour dough toasts to start; roast beef sirloin with Yorkshire pudding and a rich red wine jus for main; and Christmas plum pudding with rum ice cream and the all important brandy sauce to follow. The fourth course comes in the form of tea or coffee with warm mini mince pies.

5. THOMPSON, St Albans

The two AA Rosette awarded THOMPSON in St Albans are sure to be a hit with foodies this Christmas Day. The menus at THOMPSON reflect seasonal changes in foods to get the most out of their ingredients and Christmas time is no exception. There are six courses of deliciousness available so skip some of those Quality Street and arrive hungry!

First will be a canapé of smoked salmon and poppy seed croissant with fromage black; starters will include lobster ravioli with braised fennel, pickled onion petals, in a roast lobster bisque; middle course will be a caramelised scallop with broccoli purée, brown shrimp and almond butter; followed by the main event, we suggest the Norfolk black turkey breast with pigs in blankets, sage stuffing, Brussel Fricassee with a roast turkey jus. Nearly there: pre-dessert will be honey yoghurt with pear and mulled wine before a choice of three desserts including a bitter chocolate and pistachio layer cake with chocolate cremaux and pistachio ice cream.

6. Sopwell House, St Albans

Enjoy canapés at the “sparkling reception” in the seasonally decorated St Alban Suite of Sopwell House, the grand country house hotel, before indulging in a decadent Christmas Day feast with friends and family.

Starters include a pressed confit duck terrine with grape chutney and toasted brioche before a palate-cleansing passion fruit sorbet to prepare guests for the main course. If you’re opting for traditional turkey, expect accompaniments of roast potatoes, cranberry, orange and chestnut stuffing, seasonal root vegetables, pigs in blankets and a bread sauce. For dessert choose between a traditional Christmas pudding, a white chocolate and blueberry cheesecake, buttermilk panna cotta or a cheese board. If you have room, enjoy coffee and mince pies before heading back home.

7. The Tilbury Pub & Dining Rooms, Datchworth

Run by a pair of brothers, James and Tom Bainbridge, The Tilbury Pub & Dining Rooms in the village of Datchworth is highly praised for its traditionally British cuisine, earning spots in the Michelin Guide and gaining double AA rosettes.

8. The Crown, Broxbourne

One of our favourite riverside pubs in the county, The Crown in Broxbourne is offering a three course festive Christmas Day lunch in a cosy country pub environment. Adorned in Christmas decorations with a fire crackling away, this pub is a perfect place to enjoy a tranquil meal on the 25th.

Starters include smoked beetroot tarte tatin topped with goat’s cheese and green apple salad before mains including turkey breast with a clementine, tarragon and fig stuffing ball, pig in blanket, crunchy roast potatoes and gravy. Finish off with a dessert such as the gingerbread crème brulee or a raspberry and white chocolate Eton mess with a dash of Chambord, the black raspberry liquor.
